The free software definition from WiKi<\/strong>
\nThe word \"free\" in our name does not refer to price; it refers to freedom. First, the freedom to copy a program and redistribute it to your neighbors, so that they can use it as well as you. Second, the freedom to change a program, so that you can control it instead of it controlling you; for this, the source code must be made available to you.<\/p>\n

The modern definition defines free software by whether or not the recipient has the following four freedoms:<\/p>\n

  • The freedom to run the program as you wish, for any purpose (freedom 0).<\/li>\n
  • The freedom to study how the program works, and change it so it does your computing as you wish (freedom 1). Access to the source code is a precondition for this.<\/li>\n
  • The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor (freedom 2).<\/li>\n
  • The freedom to distribute copies of your modified versions to others (freedom 3). By doing this you can give the whole community a chance to benefit from your changes. Access to the source code is a precondition for this.<\/li>\n

    \nOpen-source software (OSS) is a type of computer software in which source code is released under a license in which the copyright holder grants users the rights to study, change, and distribute the software to anyone and for any purpose.
